In approximately 800BC the Phoenicians were the first settlers in the area and there are artefacts from this period in the town’s museum in the Castle of San Miguel and also in the ‘Cueva de Siete Palacios’. The old quarter of Almuñecar is called the Barrio de San Miguel, where winding streets full of balconies of flowers lead to the 16th-century Moorish castle and other interesting archaeological remains.
