BURIAL OF THE SARDINE

The Entierro de la Sardina is the most expected “fiesta” in the Murcia region. It symbolizes the victory of Don Cranal over Doña Cuaresma at the end of the Easter week. This is why it’s celebrated at the end of the carnival. It is the most important celebration of the year in Murcia and has been declared to be of international tourist interest. The people of Murcia go out into the streets wearing their best smiles and turn the city into a happy and enjoyable spring celebration that receives thousands of visitors every year.

The Entierro de la Sardina is the main celebration in the Spring Fiestas of Murcia, that are celebrated after Easter week. They are known to be colourful and bright, just like spring. The streets of the city are filled with sardineros giving out toys and joy to children and adults. It’s nice to enjoy a cold beer with a marinera at one of the outdoor terraces in the city squares. For a whole week the city welcomes people for all around the world. And at the end of the week, on Saturday there is big parade with floats, musicians, acrobats, dancers, glant inflatable characters and many more. More than 2 million toys are given away and nearly 500.000 balls,

At the end of the parade the bonfire is ready to burn the sardine and you can see joy and tears of emotion in the audience while they sing the Himno Sardinero and start the countdown for the next year.
